making the pattern from a 3x3 document will only lower the distance of the scanlines by 2. Personally i dont like such a thinner look.

Oh then its just me I think they look better closer. When there far away to me it looks plan and not as smooth, but that jsut me I guess.

yeah normally is by personal choice. But i guess that using such a pattern in images based bars would mess a bit the pictures. In bars with just colors or small images it gives a nice effect, but still to me it seems a bit limited in use.
