so we are going to make an userbar in GIMP now, you can download GIMP here !

i sugest you first read the tutorial, how to make patterns in GIMP find it Here

This is my first tuturial i made, i hope it can help you

So on the following image we sse the main gimp window. Now Go to File -> New (as explained)

The tab on the left of the image will appear. Type 350x19 and make an Transparant Background. Click OK

Now DBL click on the Foreground colour, there will appear a tab where u can select a colour.
Pic Dark Red.
Now do the same with the background colour but pic lighter Red. (You can see this on the following image)

Now click on GRADIENT wich looks like a little square in ur tools. (gradient is selected )

Now Change the Shape of the Gradient to Bi-Linear. Then go into your 350x19 image and pull a line. Try to get something as in the pic above.

-

Now we are going to fill the image with the pattern we made.
Pic the bucket tool in your tools and select fill with pattern. Lower the opacity, Choose the pat you have made and click in your image this is what you should get:

Now we are going to import another picture i choose for this logo.

So go to: File -> Open -> a window will open, choose ur pic.
Now that we have the image we are going to put it into our userbar. push select-all (CTRL+A) and then right click on the image, Copy visible( see pic.)

now paste in your userbar and go to Layers -> Achor layer

Now we are going to import another Image so repeat the last steps to past another image into your userbar.

This is what we get:

Now we are going to type our text !

We click on the text "The Big T"

and click on whats clicked on in the following image. See that Anti-aliasering is off !!

now click into your image once. A little window where u can write in will apear.
write ur text there; in my case: userbars.org Forum User.

Now we are going to change the colour of the text. i know you can also do this befor u typed but its the same Smiley

Now we still have the little txt window open. Click on the large colour tab in the middle.
this colour window will open:

Select white like in the image and push OK. Now your text will be white like in the image.

Now the userbar is almost finished you can get some effects in it by using the elliptical tool and then full it with the gradient and lower the gradiont opaccity.
But the most important thing is to add a border !

This is how i do it, you have a nice and easy border here, there are other ways too.
Make a new image of 317 x 17 with a transparant background
then follow the instruction on this image:

Now Go to: Layer -> Merge Down
Select all (CTRL+A) and copy it (CTRL+C)

now Go back to your userbar and paste it there.
Now your userbar is finished
So this here is the end Result:
